Your medicine cabinet is probably stocked with everything you need for a family health emergency. (If it isn’t, click here for a list of essentials). But are you prepared if your dog—or cat—gets sick or injured? The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters has put together the following list to help pet parents be ready for anything.

Your pet first aid kit should contain:

  • Phone numbers for your veterinarian, emergency veterinary clinic and Animal Poison Control Center (there may be a fee for this call)
  • Gauze for wrapping wounds
  • Nonstick bandages, towels, or strips of clean cloth to control bleeding or protect wounds
  • Adhesive tape for bandages for securing gauze wrap
  • Milk of magnesia or activated charcoal to absorb poison
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3%) to induce vomiting
  • Digital fever thermometer to check temperature
  • Eye dropper to give oral treatments or flush wound
  • Muzzle to cover your pet’s head, only if he or she is not vomiting
  • Leash to transport your pet if he or she can walk without further injury
