A hiatal hernia may go completely unnoticed, or it may cause discomfort or pain during normal daily activities. Hiatal hernia symptoms are generally relatively easy to manage, with small changes to diet, lifestyle and the possible addition of antacids. If these measures do not control the symptoms, then more drastic measures — such as surgery — may be necessary. The symptoms of hiatal hernia should always be evaluated by a doctor; the primary symptoms could be related to more serious medical issues be or a sign that your hernia could be serious.

Common symptoms. According to the National Library of Medicine, “A hiatal hernia by itself rarely causes symptoms. Pain and discomfort are usually due to the reflux of gastric acid, air, or bile.” In most cases, the most prominent symptom will be persistent acid reflux. You may notice an increase in heartburn if you lay down or bend over within about an hour of eating, especially after heavy meals. Exercise may also bring on more intense bouts of heartburn. Frequent belching may also occur. For more serious cases, difficulty swallowing may become an issue.

When to consult a doctor. As soon as you experience uncomfortable and persistent symptoms, you should consult your doctor about management options. While hiatal hernias do not often have serious complications, it is important to rule out any other potential health issue as the root cause of the symptoms. Stay in communication with your doctor throughout treatment or symptom management; additional measures may be required if non-invasive treatment isn’t effective. Also contact your doctor if you have an unexplained fever, are immune-suppressed and experience an increase in symptoms, or have other warning signs of potential infection or other complications. In addition, if the pain and discomfort gets to a point where it’s interfering with your normal daily activities, treatment should begin immediately.
