Even after you’ve found the perfect gym, it can still be a challenge to get in the habit of going. How often do you start off with the best of intentions, only to let everything else get in the way? The most common excuse we tell ourselves is we don’t have enough time. After a couple months, going to the gym seems like a pipe dream. Luckily, you’re not alone—countless people fall into the same trap. So how can you find a program you’ll stick to?

Consider Your Lifestyle

Are you a busy CEO? Maybe your day is full of activities for the household. Or perhaps you hold odd hours. Whatever your situation, assess just how much time you actually have for fitness. Not everyone has a full hour or even half hour. With that said, you can still get a great workout in 10 minutes. There are numerous videos you can find on YouTube that will help you work up a sweat. With videos, you can work out even when you travel. You might need to get around geo-restrictions depending on what country you’re in, but luckily there are some great Virtual Private Networks available, so you can work out wherever you are.

Stop Doing What You Hate

There are a lot of people who instinctively groan whenever they think about going to the gym. If you’re one of those people, then you’ll be happy to hear you don’t need to go to get a good workout. Hate running? Then don’t push yourself to do it. There are hundreds of other ways you can get in some exercise and still have fun. For example, joining a local sports team can be a great way to work out while also meeting new friends. If that’s not your thing, you can always turn everyday chores into exercise. Instead of walking your dog, jog. When carrying groceries to your car, do some curls with the bags at the same time. At work? Do some leg lifts. It might sound silly, but the point is to keep moving your body.

Get Others Involved

It’s a lot easier to stick to a plan when you have others committed to the same goal. Whether it’s your significant other or just a friend, you’re more likely to keep up with a fitness plan when you involve someone else. Not only does it make it more fun, it also leads to more accountability. If you don’t have someone who wants to join you on your fitness journey, there are plenty of online groups you can join. Not only will they provide you with support, many also provide tips on proper form and even good workout routines. Even better, many of these sites also provide tools to track your progress.

Start Slow and Build Momentum

If you haven’t worked out in a while, then it’s important to take it slow. It might seem embarrassing to start with light weights or run on the treadmill for only 10 minutes, but remember that fitness isn’t a competition. To reap the full benefits, you need to go at your own pace. Don’t compare yourself to others. Focus on improving yourself every day. Soon enough, you’ll realize you’ve become much stronger and fitter. While it’s good to push yourself, make sure you don’t push yourself too hard. An injury can set back your progress by months, and you may be disinclined to go back to your previous program.
