Q: Can hangovers be prevented?

A: There’s only one surefire way to prevent hangovers: Don’t drink too much! But when you’re attending festivities where the alcohol is flowing freely, these steps can help make the next morning  a little smoother and safer:

  • Choose light alcohol over dark alcohol. Darker drinks contain substances called congeners that give flavor, color and aroma to alcohol—and may also increase your chances of a hangover headache.
  • Eat foods with healthy fats such as avocados or walnuts while you drink to help slow or delay alcohol absorption.
