Joy Bauer’s Healthy Snacking Tips

It happens like clockwork: Right around 3:00 in the afternoon, a snack attack hits you with a vengeance. Suddenly, those leftover donuts in the conference room are starting to look pretty darn appealing, and that bag of chips stowed in your desk drawer is practically calling your name.

As a busy bee herself, renowned nutrition expert Joy Bauer, MS, RDN, CDN, can relate to that running-on-empty feeling. “Almost 30 percent of the average person’s daily calorie intake comes from snacks,” says the TODAY show nutritionist, author and mom. “We’re always on the go. We’re working exorbitantly long hours. We don’t always have time for a proper sit-down meal.”

But loading up on sugary snacks can backfire, leading to a massive crash a few hours later. The key, Joy says, is to stock up on wholesome, nutritious between-meal nibbles that will stave off hunger and keep you energized. The ideal snack contains a powerful punch of protein, fiber, nutrients and antioxidants. Unfortunately, though, many of the popular pre-packaged snacks that bill themselves as “low-calorie” aren’t all that satisfying—or all that nutritious.

Hoping to take the guesswork out of healthy snacking, Joy recently launched Nourish Snacks, a subscription-based line of gourmet healthy snacks that clock in at less than 200 calories per package. If you know it has Joy Bauer’s stamp of approval on it, you know it has to be good. Joy designed her snacks based on a number of nutritional criteria: high in fiber, a good source of protein, and low in calories. Furthermore, she sought to use the best ingredients possible, which means her snacks are completely free of GMOs or preservatives.

And, of course, taste was an utmost priority. “Taste is pivotal,” Joy says. “Our motto is, ‘Healthy meets delicious.”

Luckily for us here at Spry Living, we got to sample some of Joy’s delightful snack creations—and were mightily pleased. The snacks, which are pre-portioned so you don’t overeat, come in a variety of inspired, creative flavors, ranging from Mediterranean-spiced pistachios to cinnamon-roasted almonds to spicy habanera corn nuts. “I wanted to come up with a variety of gourmet flavors that would suit all types of cravings—sweet, salty, savory, spicy, etc.—so that there was something for everyone,” Joy says.

The benefits of mindful snacking are well documented. Eating between meals can promote weight loss, fire up metabolism, and keep energy levels soaring. As Joy says, “Snacking keeps us at the top of our game.” She adds: “Eating between meals helps keep blood sugar steady, which in turn keeps energy steady, ensuring that you don’t crash. It also regulates appetite so that you don’t gorge yourself at the next meal.”
