New Discovery Gives Hope for a Schizophrenia Cure

Schizophrenia, a mental illness characterized by the breakdown of thought processes and the impairment of emotional responses, affects nearly 20 million people worldwide. Currently, this inscrutable, enigmatic disease has no known cure and few effective treatments. However, recent breakthrough research is putting promising new treatments—and the prospect of a cure—on the horizon.

“If finding the cause of schizophrenia is like solving a jigsaw puzzle, then these new results give us the corners and some of the pieces on the edges,” says Dr. Patrick F. Sullivan, a geneticist and co-author of the study.
