Although the full health benefits received from calcium are unclear, it is highly recommended by clinicians primarily for its effect on bone health. Research on calcium and cardiovascular health has been conflicting, with some studies showing calcium may be beneficial to heart health, while others indicating it may be associated with an increase in heart disease. However, the researchers’ analysis of the study showed that a daily dose of up to 1,000 mg of calcium—regardless of the source—was more likely to benefit than harm women. Overall, women who received a moderate amount of calcium daily had a 22% lower risk for early death in the study.
