The 17-Day Diet is one of many diet plans to have made it into the popular media within the last several years. Originally penned by Dr. Michael Moreno, the book detailing the diet plan shot up the bestseller lists, aided by publicity by Dr. Phil and other such media favorites. However, as with many of the diets out there, it can be very difficult to tell if any given weight-loss plan will be effective for you. While only your doctor and nutritionist can offer a truly individualized approach to your diet and fitness, it is possible that the 17-Day Diet could be beneficial if you have been struggling with excess weight. As with any plan, be sure to consult your doctor before beginning the 17-Day Diet.

Structure of the 17-Day Diet. The name of the 17-Day Diet can be somewhat misleading. Rather than lasting 17 days, it is a series of 17-day cycles that help boost metabolism, increase rate of fat burn and — most importantly — form habits for lifelong healthy change. This last item is what most of the “fad diets” on the market are missing and why the vast majority don’t work. The 17-Day Diet plan consists of three cycles while you’re achieving your ideal weight, as well as one that is meant to be practiced indefinitely for weight maintenance.

Who the diet is for. Primarily, the 17-Day Diet is intended for complete beginners — that is, if you’re significantly overweight and are not currently in the habit of exercising on a daily basis. Many doctors recommend this or similar diet plans for people who have been newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or that are in danger of developing diabetes. According to the National Library of Medicine, “Type 2 diabetes usually occurs slowly over time. Most people with the disease are overweight when they are diagnosed. Increased fat makes it harder for your body to use insulin the correct way.” Even a 10 percent reduction in overall weight can make a significant difference in the manageability of diabetes, and the 17 Day Diet aims to achieve at least that in fat loss. Again, however, make sure to consult your doctor before beginning the diet plan.

Benefits of the 17-Day Diet. If you’ve been constantly struggling with the kind of permanent changes you need to make in your life in order to achieve a healthy weight, then the 17 Day Diet may be a good option for you. The 17-day cycles are often far more motivating than indefinite plans that show slower weight loss. Many also find the diet plan easier to stick to because it is aiming for something that can be maintained indefinitely and does not revolve around extreme measures or abstaining from all of your favorite foods.
