“The brain is the most complicated object in the known universe, but it’s surprisingly easy to trick,” says Jason Silva, host of National Geographic Channel’s Brain Games, returning Jan. 13. Here’s how to keep it sharp in 2014.

Brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. “The brain is stimulated by novelty,” Silva says. Apply the same principle on a larger scale by traveling. “It’s amazing how much it resets your brain.”

Go to the movies. Your leisure time can double as brain training if you choose activities that require you to focus. Silva says, “The movie theater is one place that forces you to turn off every other distraction and enter a zone of imagination.”

Embrace social media—selectively. Technology can easily overwhelm the brain, especially when we multitask. But social media can also connect you with people whose ideas stimulate your mind, Silva says. Don’t just follow friends and family—add writers and thinkers you admire to your Facebook or Twitter feed to soak up their smarts.
