A Surprising New Source of Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency is a more common problem than most people realize, linked to everything from increased risk of breast cancer and bone disease to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and childhood asthma. A new trial study released at the recent American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Experimental Biology meeting in Boston found that vitamin D supplements may not be the only answer to vitamin D deficiency.

The study results show that mushrooms that have been exposed to ultraviolet rays contain and are a good source of vitamin D2. And while doctors won’t likely recommend replacing supplements with mushrooms, it’s always nice to have a tasty alternative.
