It’s natural to look back on the past year—its ups and downs, its challenges and triumphs, any changes you’ve made in your life. Are you happier today than you were this time last year? Have you adopted habits—those presented in this column, or that you’ve come up with on your own—to promote positivity and reduce negativity in your life?

Looking back can help guide you as you move forward in 2016. Take a few quiet moments to write down answers to the following questions; they will help shape the next phase in your journey toward happiness.

  • What would you like to let go of in 2016? What would you like to add more of?
  • What is something in your past that you are proud of? This will reveal your character strengths.
  • What is something in the present that excites you? This will reveal your passions.
  • What is something you are looking forward to in the future? This will reveal your meaning and purpose.

Consider theses answers as you set goals for 2016. When you craft goals that are rooted in your strengths, inspired by your passions and fueled by your sense of purpose, you’ll feel empowered and energetic as you work toward them.
