Aerial Yoga Do’s and Don’ts

Do add aerial yoga to your regular fitness regimen as a way to have fun while increasing strength and flexibility.

Don’t be intimidated by the aerial poses. You’ll discover even the scariest looking pose is doable once the teacher walks you through it.

Do eat a light snack before class to avoid getting light-headed. Avoid eating a full meal within two to three hours beforehand.

Do keep well hydrated before, during and after class. Staying hydrated can also alleviate any headaches that come from staying inverted too long.

Do wear yoga pants long enough to cover your knees (no shorts).

Don’t wear a tank top, to be safe: Some studios don’t allow them in order to prevent soiling the hammocks with excessive perspiration. A close-fitting t-shirt or one that tucks into your pants will keep you from flashing the class during an inversion.

Don’t worry about shoes; like other yoga disciplines, aerial yoga is done barefoot.

Do try aerial yoga if you have limb or joint injuries. The hammock supports about 50 percent of your body weight during poses, which alleviates pressure on joints.

Don’t remain inverted for too long, especially if you have high blood pressure. Listen to your body, and any time you feel too much pressure or feel dizzy, make your way upright.

Don’t practice aerial yoga if you’re pregnant. (The safety of inverting while pregnant is debated in the yoga community.)

Do buff your feet and file your nails. The hammocks don’t tear easily, but it can be uncomfortable when calluses catch the silky fabric.

Do seek out an instructor who is certified in yoga instruction and formally trained in using aerial hammocks.

Do check with your doctor first, especially if you are prone to vertigo or have an inner ear condition.
