Good news for marijuana enthusiasts: A pair of studies this week revealed that the drug’s active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may lower the risk of both Type 2 diabetes and bladder cancer. Moreover, for people who already have diabetes, regular use of marijuana appeared to help manage their condition, by lowering their fasting insulin and insulin resistance levels. It also appeared to raise levels of HDL, or “good” cholesterol. In an accompanying editorial in the American Journal of Medicine, where the study was published, the editor-in-chief suggested that the effects were so positive that it wouldn’t be surprising to see doctors prescribing the drug as part of a diabetic’s regimen in the future.
