As a prominent breast cancer surgeon and women’s health specialist, Dr. Susan Love had seen countless cancer patients over the years. But in June 2012, she unexpectedly found herself on the other side of the stethoscope when she was diagnosed with leukemia. The experience of being a cancer patient only strengthened her conviction that finding the cause of breast cancer is more important than finding treatments for breast cancer.
“It gave me a taste of what it’s like being on the other side of the table, so to speak,” Love said in an exclusive one-on-one interview with Spry Living. “It made me feel even more strongly that the answer is not treatment—that the answer is find the cause and prevent it.”
Below, the well-known breast cancer surgeon, activist, author and researcher opens up about her personal journey with cancer and discusses her innovative research project, Dr. Love’s Army of Women, aimed at discovering the cause of breast cancer.
