These days, many women are showing off their natural gray — often with fabulous results. Whether you're ready to ditch the hair dye completely or prefer something in-between, try these tricks from well-known stylist and entrepreneur Frederic Fekkai.
If you're only a little gray: You don't need color all over. Instead, consider adding highlights or lowlights — what the pros call "camouflage." Fekkai says letting some of the gray show through "will make you feel younger but still look natural," while keeping the maintenance work low.
If you're 30 percent gray: Use a permanent color if you still want to hide the gray. At-home kits can save you big bucks. Plus, they've improved over the years — Fekkai says some brands now provide extra-nourishing conditioners and allow quick root touch-ups.
If you're 50 percent gray or more: "It may be time to embrace your gray," Fekkai says. If you've been coloring your hair until now, adding highlights or lowlights can help ease the transition.
Once you go all the way: Start with a chic cut, and use the right products to keep your silvery locks healthy. Fekkai recommends rinsing with a clarifying shampoo once a week to add shine and prevent yellowing. Deep condition a few times a week.
