Consider it a flash of genius: a simple breathing exercise that prevents possibly the most annoying of menopausal symptoms. In one study, this technique cut the number of hot flashes suffered by a group of women in half. Worth a try—even if all you get is a little me-time.

  1. Sit in a quiet room.
  2. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose for 5 seconds, then exhale slowly through pursed lips for 8 seconds. Be sure to breathe so that your belly expands as you inhale and contracts as you exhale.
  3. Repeat for 15 minutes each morning and afternoon, and whenever you feel a flash coming on.
