Studies from two major universities suggest that “mindfulness” and meditation can help ease the pain of arthritis. Here’s how to do it, from Dr. Sue Smalley, co-author of Fully Present.
- Breathe
Relax, take a few breaths and imagine your breath going into and softening the painful area. - Change your focus
To ease your mind and allow your body to relax, concentrate on a part of your body that isn’t hurting. - Adjust your attitude
Being as kind as possible to yourself in the midst of pain can help you cope. Imagine that you are gently holding the painful part of the body, as if it were a small child or puppy.
