Scientists from the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia report that the presence of a certain type of ovarian cyst may be an early warning sign of ovarian cancer, a notoriously hard-to-diagnose disease. What’s more, the cyst–called an inclusion cyst–grows from a unique legion inside the ovary, meaning there’s potential for even earlier detection of the cancer. The scientists hope to use this discovery to develop a screening test for ovarian cancer. To read the complete study in the journal of the Public Library of Science, click here.
