Walking about a mile per day could significantly benefit your health, say two scientists from the University of Texas at Austin, who reviewed the results of 18 multi-year studies on the subject. Each of the studies collected information about the subjects' exercise habits and health risk factors and found that walking reduced the risk of heart attack or stroke by 31 percent and cut the risk of dying during the study period by 32 percent.

Although walking long distances at a faster pace best cut health risks, even walking shorter and slower can make a difference.
