If you have already been diagnosed with diabetes, you can still reap the healthy benefits of exercise. But there are a few precautions you should take.

“Exercise will have an effect on your blood sugar,” says Dr. David Kendall of the American Diabetes Association. “Vigorous exercise can raise it, and prolonged exercise can lower it.”

Check with your doctor for precise guidelines on your personal exercise program, based on the specifics of your condition and treatment plan. People who have high cardiovascular risks should also consult with a healthcare provider before starting a new routine.

When it’s time to work out, keep snacks close at hand in the event you feel woozy, and drink plenty of water throughout. If you’re leaving your house to walk or go to the gym, be sure you have your medical ID on you in case of emergency.
