What Does “Safe” Sound Like?

Sound is measured in decibels, units of loudness, or pressure on the ear. Eighty-five decibels—city traffic—or below is safe. Here’s a list of noisemakers and their sound levels.

Firecrackers: 150 dB

Siren: 120 dB

Rock concert: 115 dB

Motorcycle: 95 dB

Regular conversation: 60 dB

Humming refrigerator: 40 dB

Whisper: 30 dB
