  1. Backpack or fanny pack. Stow your stuff in a strap-on, hands-free pack.
  2. Snacks. Pack durable, easy-to-carry snacks such as almonds and energy bars.
  3. Cellphone. Make sure batteries are charged.
  4. GPS. Know your position.
  5. Compass. It’s low-tech but vital.
  6. First-aid kit. Include acetaminophen, antihistamines, bandages, calamine lotion, tweezers and antibacterial wipes.
  7. Insect repellent. Don’t hit the trail without it—you’ll be sorry.
  8. Sunscreen. SPF 15 or higher, and reapply frequently.
  9. Water filter or iodine tablets. In case fresh water runs out, you can use to purify stream or river water.
  10. Walking stick. You may need something besides your buddy to lean on.
