- Backpack or fanny pack. Stow your stuff in a strap-on, hands-free pack.
- Snacks. Pack durable, easy-to-carry snacks such as almonds and energy bars.
- Cellphone. Make sure batteries are charged.
- GPS. Know your position.
- Compass. It’s low-tech but vital.
- First-aid kit. Include acetaminophen, antihistamines, bandages, calamine lotion, tweezers and antibacterial wipes.
- Insect repellent. Don’t hit the trail without it—you’ll be sorry.
- Sunscreen. SPF 15 or higher, and reapply frequently.
- Water filter or iodine tablets. In case fresh water runs out, you can use to purify stream or river water.
- Walking stick. You may need something besides your buddy to lean on.
