Seize the season. To stay motivated, sign up for a turkey trot (find listings on Active.com) or a jingle-bell walk/run, like those held nationwide by the Arthritis Foundation (Arthritis.org). Or, plan an active vacation around learning a new winter sport like skiing or snowshoeing.

Rise and shine. Get yourself moving on darker mornings by buddying up with a partner, laying your gym clothes out the night before, presetting your coffee maker so that a steaming cup is waiting for you upon wakeup, and jumping in the shower for 30 seconds before getting dressed.

Get in gear. The right clothing and accessories can get you through the coldest days. Experiment with layers to get the right mix. For safety’s sake, look for easy-to-spot pieces like hats, tops and jackets in Brooks’ NightLife collection (Brooksrunning.com).
