  • Cook: 15 mins

Ingredients

4cups all purpose flour
4tablespoons granulated sugar
3tablespoons baking powder, no sodium OR 2 tablespoons double acting baking powder
2teaspoons salt
3/4cup Walnut Spread (See Recipe)
1-3/4cup nonfat milk
2teaspoons Italian herbs, dried

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt; stir and toss to combine.  Add Walnut Spread and blend into dry ingredients until reduced to small bits and flakes.

  2. Whisk together milk and herbs.  Add to dry ingredients and stir just until dough masses together.

  3. Scrape onto lightly floured surface and with floured hands knead gently 6 times; dived dough in half.  On floured surface pat each piece to a 6 x 12-inch rectangle about ½-inch thick.

  4. Cut each rectangle crosswise into 12 “sticks” 1-inch wide and 6 inches long.  Place, barely touching, on parchment-lined sheet pans.

  5. Bake at 425F until puffed and browned, 15-18 minutes.

APPLICATIONS:

This recipe makes 24 sticks (24 servings).  It is worth making extra because Walnut Biscuit Bread Sticks can be offered with all manner of soups and salads.  For a more traditional breakfast or brunch bread, omit the herbs and increase sugar to ½ cup (4 oz.).  Sprinkle sticks lightly with cinnamon-sugar before baking.
